Prof.dr. G.A. Lindeboom Instituut

Activities

The main activities to be employed in order to achieve the aims of the PLI are:

Research
Many research projects have been conducted during the last two decades. Among these are projects in medical genetics, ethics of reproductive technologies, professional autonomy and health care policy, and end-of life issues, palliative care and spiritual care. Some of these research projects are being continued e.g. on various aspects of genetics, embryo research, professional autonomy in relation to cost containment in health care, a Christian philosophy of care.

Lecturing in medical ethics for students in medicine or nursing.
This includes establishing chairs of medical ethics at Dutch universities. In 1993, the Institute founded the Lindeboom Chair for Medical Ethics at the Free University of Amsterdam. J. Douma, Th.D., was the first professor appointed to this chair in 1998 succeeded by H. Jochemsen PhD. In addition, since 1992 the institute supports the chair of Reformed Philosophy of Prof. G. Glas, MD, and PhD., at the State University of Leiden.

Publishing
The PLI publishes books, reports, articles and brochures, in which the results of the mentioned studies are presented to those who are in any way involved in health care, such as doctors, nurses, students in medicine and nursing, health care organisations, those responsible for health care policy and politicians. The PLI and publisher Buijten & Schipperheijn, Amsterdam, have established an Editorial Board for the publication of a series of books on health care ethics, the Lindeboomreeks. Meanwhile sixteen volumes have been published.
News on the Institute’s activities and publications are presented in the Lindeblad, a Newsletter of the PLI.
Further, the PLI is collaborating with the Centre for Bioethics and Human Dignity (Deerfield, Illinois, USA) and the Centre for Bioethics and Public Policy (London) in the publication of the international journal Ethics and Medicine.

Documentation Centre
The institute is building a modest library of Dutch and foreign literature on medical ethics and related topics with special emphasis on Christian contributions. Hundreds of requests for information, literature and other materials on medical ethics have been answered. Students, doctors, nurses and healthcare workers, theologians, the participants of the Institute, teachers, parents, and etcetera made inquiries. The library can be accessed and searched through an online database.
Other ways of meeting the need for information and reflection on medical ethics are the organisation and/or participation in meetings and conferences and participation in the production of brochures and last but not least by its website. Coordinating the cooperation between organisations of the Advisory Council in offering help (advise and help by social workers) to people with problems concerning genetic and congenital disorders.
The institute also prepared educational materials on behalf of the Nederlandse Patiënten Vereniging.
Maintenance of a centre for documentation and information on medical ethics. Requests for information and advice on various topics can be submitted to the Institute.
